Promising Young Woman meets Buffy The Vampire Slayer in a new six-part supernatural drama about modern-day witches in Manchester. But don’t expect broomsticks, pointy hats and wands, says Domino Day creator Lauren Sequeira – these are witches “like you’ve never seen before”. Lauren describes her first original TV series as “dark, sexy and deep”, adding, “It has a lot to say about the world.” The show is also steeped in feminism, something that was important to BAFTA nominated rising star Siena Kelly, who plays the lead role of Domino.
“I mainly loved that it was such a complicated, conflicted person. And that it wasn’t just like a ‘strong woman’. I never really understand what that means,” Siena says.
“It was this really fleshed-out, flawed person who makes mistakes," Siena continues. "We watch Domino go on a journey, stepping into her power and learning how to use it. And also finding a coven, which is full of women, sisterhood and connecting with them and realising that she needs a community.” The series follows Domino, a powerful witch who feeds off the energy of others and uses dating apps to hunt down her victims.
“A coven of witches is the aim of stopping her before she hurts someone. Siena says she fell in love with the script instantly. “I just felt so much empathy towards Domino and her situation,” she explains.
