A centre for a rapidly growing new form of tennis is earmarked for a site in Prestwich. Pure Padel Clubs have submitted plans to build five courts, a pavilion and floodlights on land at the Manchester Maccabi Community and
Sports Club, Bury Old Road.
Padel is a mix between tennis and squash. The court is one third of the size of a tennis court and surrounded by walls of glass and metallic mesh.
Using a short, stringless racquet with holes and a low compression tennis ball, service is made underarm. A design and access report in support of the plans, said: “Padel is a form of tennis which and rapidly expanding sport across Europe and recognised by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
“The LTA have ambitious plans to grow padel across Great Britain over the coming years. The proposed development would respond to the increased demand for padel for visitors to Manchester Maccabi Community Sports Club.x

“Padel offers significant health and well-being benefits by attracting people who might not otherwise participate in a sport or indeed who might not otherwise participate in any form of exercise. To date, the applicant isn’t aware of any padel courts in operation in Bury.
“The proposed development would therefore directly respond to the increased demand.” Earlier this week, the largest facility for padel in the north of England was approved by Trafford council.
The green light for the 1.5-acre site will expand The Padel Club in TraffordCity. That club will have 11 courts of which nine will be covered.
For the proposed Prestwich padel club Pure Padel said their business model does not involve any membership fees. Booking os secured through a smartphone app or online.
