Health experts are warning of a rise in Covid-19 cases - and hospitalisations - as a new variant sweeps the UK.
There has been a rise in Covid-19 cases and a 'small rise in hospital admission rates in most age groups, particularly among the elderly', the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed. The health chiefs have issued key advice on what to do to keep safe from coronavirus and how to stop it passing onto others if you're unwell.
The warnings come as a new variant has taken hold in the UK. Given the name Eris by experts, the variant of the widespread Omicron strain has seen a surge in cases, with one in seven infected now believed to have caught it.

On July 1, 3.3 people out of every 100,000 had Covid – but that has now jumped significantly, with 7.2 having it as of July 29. Eris hit the UK in early May, with the World Health Organisation adding it to its watch list under the identification of EG.5.1 soon after.
It is now the second most common strain in the country, closing in on Arcturus. Eris is also spreading rapidly across Europe, Asia and North America. Japan said it is seeing a 'ninth wave' of Covid infections.
Dr Meera Chand, Deputy Director, UKHSA said: "It is not unexpected to see new variants of SARS-CoV-2 emerge. UKHSA continues to analyse available data relating to SARS-CoV-2 variants in the UK and abroad.
"EG.5.1 was designated as a variant on 31 July 2023 due to continued growth internationally and presence in the UK, allowing us to monitor it through our routine surveillance processes. Vaccination remains our best defence against future Covid-19 waves, so it is still as important as ever that people come take
