More than 45,200 people have signed an online petition calling for a ‘universal’ weekly State Pension payment of nearly £550 in order to match the current hourly rate of the National Living Wage. Petition creator Michael Thompson also suggests making the option to claim State Pension available to everyone from the age of 60.
Last month the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) rejected the proposed payment increase that would be equivalent to 48 hours at the National Living Wage and worth £28,554.24 over the 2024/25 financial year. The written response came after the petition reached the 10,000 signature threshold, however, at 100,000 signatures it would be considered by the Petitions Committee for debate in Parliament - and it's nearly at the halfway mark with more than 17 weeks to go before the petition deadline expires.
In its written response the DWP said that the UK Government has “no plans to increase the State Pension to equal 48 hours at the National Living Wage or to be made available from age 60”, but added that it is “committed to ensuring economic security for people at every stage of their life, including when they reach retirement”.
The DWP response on the petitions-parliament website continued: “This year, the Government will spend over £152 billion directly on the State Pension and benefits for pensioners in Great Britain. Last year, the State Pension saw its biggest ever rise, increasing by 10.1%.
"The full yearly rate of the new State Pension is now over £10,600 per year. In addition, the full yearly amount of the basic State Pension is over £3,050 higher, in cash terms, than in 2010.”
You can read the full DWP response in full on the petitions-parliament website here.
