Netflix to Invest $45 Million in French and European Cinema

Sigur Rós have announced details of a UK and European tour for later this year – check out the full list of dates below.Following the announcement of tour dates in the United States, Mexico and Canada last month, Sigur Rós have now confirmed a lengthy run in the UK and Europe.Kicking off in Portugal on 28 September, the run of shows will take place in Italy, Germany and France before arriving in the UK for four shows, including two nights at London’s Brixton Academy. Netflix today provided a taste of its slate of original French productions coming up in 2022, which includes 25 new titles for launch this year and 20 projects currently in production. The slate, selected and developed by the Netflix France creative team, reps a total investment of more than 200M euros ($221M) across 2022. The streamer recently signed a deal with the French industry in which it committed to producing at least 10 local films per year, investing about 40M euros ($45M).   Among the projects highlighted during a presentation in Paris today was Romain Gavras’ formerly untitled feature, which is now called Athena. An immersive and modern tragedy, it stars Dali Benssalah, Sami Slimane, Anthony Bajon and is co-written with Oscar nominee Ladj Ly (Les Misérables) and Elias Belkeddar. The logline reads: In the space of a few hours following the tragic death of their younger brother in troubling circumstances, the men’s lives will tip over into chaos.

With $83 million in North American ticket sales, “Uncharted” has generated $226.4 million globally so far. That haul is impressive because “Uncharted” has yet to open in China (March 14), which currently stands as the world’s biggest theatrical market.“Uncharted” continues to pull in crowds in the United Kingdom, Holland’s birthplace.

Elsa Keslassy International CorrespondentNetflix has signed a three-year agreement with French film guilds to invest a minimum of €40 million ($45 million) in the financing of French and European movies which will be released in French theaters.Netflix previously signed a pact with France’s broadcasting authorities to start investing 20% of their annual revenues on French content, both series and movies, as part of a French decree which stemmed from the implementation of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Avms). Tuesday’s milestone agreement will see Netflix investing 4% of its annual revenue made in France on the financing of French and European movies, with at least €30 million invested in French-language movies.
