Netflix Sets Feature Take Of ‘Irredeemable’ & ‘Incorruptible’ Graphic Novel Series With Jeymes Samuel Directing, Kemp Powers Writing, Jay-Z & James Lassiter Producing

Bigelow, who became the first woman to win a directing Oscar in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker,” will direct “Aurora,” based on David Koepp’s upcoming thriller novel of the same name, for the streamer.Koepp will also write the film’s screenplay, which will join his long list of credits including “Mission: Impossible” and “Jurassic Park.” The novel “Aurora” is set to be released on June 7 by Harper Collins.Per Netflix’s announcement of the project on Twitter, the film “follows characters who are coping with the collapse of the social order, set against a catastrophic worldwide power crisis.” The novel’s blurb sets the story in Aurora, Illinois, where Aubrey Wheeler and her teenage son are forced to fend for themselves in the wake of a massive power outage.

Samuel is looking to reunite with Netflix for his next project, a superhero film based on Boom! Comics properties “Irredeemable” and its spinoff, “Incorruptible.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is aiming to combine the two comics into a single film with Samuel directing and screenwriter Kemp Powers tackling the script.

Naman Ramachandran “Silverton Siege,” an action thriller inspired by the real life incident that sparked the global Free Mandela movement, is being added to Netflix. The film is directed by noted South African filmmaker Mandla Dube (“Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu”) and stars Thabo Rametsi, Noxolo Dlamini and Stefan Erasmus.Set in 1980, Rametsi, Dlamini and Erasmus portray the Silverton Siege trio – three young freedom fighters with nothing left to lose.

NEW YORK -- Saul Williams' latest project is a blend of words and pictures.The rapper, actor and poet is working with illustrator Paul Davey (otherwise known as “mattahan”) on a graphic novel, “Let There Be Dark,” which publisher First Second Books calls a “high wire dance” that “mixes free verse and short personal essays and interrogates darkness.” The book is scheduled for the fall of 2023.“Through his words and Davey’s visionary art, the reader is taken on a dreamlike journey of ideas and questions that seek to root out white supremacist norms while it enchants the eyes and transports the mind,” according to a statement released Thursday by First Second Books, a Macmillan imprint.Williams, known for the film “Slam” and such albums as “Volcanic Sunlight,” said in a statement that he was excited to explore “the boundless mystery and beauty that connects deep sea, deep space, dark skin, and why we close our eyes when we kiss.”
