Netflix sign-ups rise over 100 per cent after password sharing crackdown

Netflix have risen by over 100 per cent since the streaming service began cracking down on password sharing.Earlier this year, the streaming service announced details of its password crackdown, making it impossible to use one account in several locations. The rule then came into force last month, with Netflix receiving major backlash from existing subscribers.Since then though, Netflix has experienced a large rise in sign-ups, with the days between May 25-28 – shortly after the May 23 announcement – becoming the platform’s four biggest days of new sign-ups in the United States since 2019, as Variety report. On those days, 73,000 new users signed up for Netflix, a 102 per cent increase on the previous 60 days.In a statement posted by Netflix last month, they explained of the rule: “Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United Kingdom.”The streaming giant said a Netflix account was “for use by one household” and those wanting to share theirs must pay £4.99 to do so.They continued to explain: “It’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV programmes – so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you’re watching with, there’s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix.”Since the announcement of the account sharing fee, Netflix has begun receiving backlash. Unhappy customers took to social media to express their annoyance with the new rules that have been implemented.

Netflix Password Crackdown Drives U.S. Sign-Ups to Highest Levels in at Least Four Years: Researcher

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor At least initially, Netflix’s broad password crackdown appears to be producing the streamer’s desired results in converting freeloaders into paying customers in the U.S., according to early data from research company Antenna. On May 23, Netflix began notifying U.S. customers that users on their accounts who live outside their households would need to be added as an “extra member” (or get their own subscriptions). Since then, Netflix has had the four single largest days of U.S. user sign-ups since January 2019, when Antenna first began tracking the metric. Based on the most current Antenna data available, Netflix saw average daily sign-ups reached 73,000 from May 25-28, a 102% increase from the prior 60-day average. That was more than the spikes in subscriber sign-ups Antenna recorded during the initial U.S. COVID-19 lockdowns in March and April 2020.

‘Sex and the City’ Author Candace Bushnell Shares Excitement for Kim Cattrall’s Return, Reflects on Show’s 25-Year Legacy

Sophia Scorziello editor When you talk to Candace Bushnell, you don’t really see Carrie Bradshaw. Instead, you see more of a Samantha Jones, a fabulous blonde woman wearing sunglasses inside her Sag Harbor home in the Hamptons. She’s put together, and eager to get down to business — she says she’s working on being her own Mr. Big rather than searching for him.  In the mid-1990s, Bushnell wrote a column for the New York Observer titled Sex and the City. There, she examined Manhattan life through the sex lives and relationships of her and her friends. As the column progressed, she began writing about herself under the pen name “Carrie Bradshaw.”

Netflix UK may delete shows if new streaming regulations are passed

Netflix has threatened to delete films and TV series from its UK catalogue if new streaming legislation is introduced by the British government. The Media Bill, a draft of which was published online in March, carries a number of proposals that would affect streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+.Under the new laws, streaming content would be subject to regulation by broadcast watchdog Ofcom, and would have to comply with the impartiality laws by which traditional broadcasters are bound.Netflix has submitted a five-page document to the UK parliament’s culture, media and sport committee, outlining the need for “greater clarity”, according to Deadline. The streaming service also criticised the plans calling them “nebulous” and potentially “onerous” for services to enforce.Netflix suggested that it would be forced to pre-emptively “purge” titles “on a regular basis” to avoid sanctions of up to £250,000.“The range and variety of Netflix’s content, generally considered a strength of our offering in terms of maximising choice for British viewers, could equally become a potential source of risk from a compliance perspective if it fell within Ofcom’s remit,” the company added.“Without considerably greater clarity around the scope and application of these provisions, it would inevitably be easier to remove content pre-emptively from our UK catalogue than risk an onerous compliance burden and potential liability.”Meanwhile, Netflix also last week received major backlash over the announcement of their new rules for any subscribers who wish to share their passwords and accounts. In a statement they explained: “Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United
