Netflix Eyes More Video Games Based On Its Own IP As It Comes Up To One Year Anniversary Of Launch

Even though it appears that “Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners” isn’t getting a Season 2, Netflix is keen to keep its video game adaptations coming. For its latest franchise, the studio is hoping that bringing “Gears of War” to life will do the trick.  According to THR, Netflix has scored the rights to adapt the “Gears of War” video game franchise into a new multimedia behemoth.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is entering into a strategic partnership with Japanese production company The Seven, owned by leading broadcaster TBS Holdings, which will produce multiple original live-action titles for the streamer over the next five years. 

Following months of negotiations, Netflix has landed the rights to popular XBox video game Gears of War. The streamer will partner with The Coalition, the video game developer behind the series, and work with them to not only develop a feature film adaptation but also an animated series.

Netflix’s VP of games Mike Verdu, speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2022 conference Tuesday, announced that the streamer was “seriously exploring” introducing a cloud gaming offering to be able to extend its catalog of games to be playable on TVs and PCs. “We’re going to approach this the same way we did with mobile, which is start small, be humble, be thoughtful, and then build out,” he said at the event. “But it is a step we think we should take to meet members where they are, on the devices where they consume Netflix.”

In a data point sure to fuel more quantity-versus-quality debate, Netflix broke its own record for number of original episodes released in a single quarter — with 1,026 in the third quarter of 2022, according to a tally by Wall Street firm MoffettNathanson. That’s more than five times any other streaming rival: Amazon Prime Video and Hulu released 223 and 194 episodes, respectively, and Disney+ debuted 140 original episodes, per the report. HBO Max, now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, released 114 episodes in the third quarter — significantly fewer episodes than usual and comprising the lightest slate for the service since Q2 2020, the second quarter after launch. WBD has been paring back HBO Max’s content slate in recent months as it looks to cut costs.

Yossman Netflix Studios U.K., the streamer’s U.K.-based production and content arm responsible for shows including “Bridgerton” and “Sex Education,” has posted £103.2 million ($114 million) worth of revenue for the year ending Dec. 31, 2021. The figure represents an increase of 31% on the previous year, ending Dec. 31, 2020, when revenue was at £78.8 million ($81 million). The revenues are entirely comprised of services rendered to the studio’s parent, Netflix Inc. The financial report, which was filed on Friday at company registrar Companies House in London, put the increase in revenue down to an “increase in use of studio space during the year.”
