James Blake and Lil Yachty Make an Odd but Unexpectedly Strong Couple on ‘Bad Cameo’: Album Review

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music As this album’s cover artwork suggests — it appears to show a restaurant table with one man drinking tea and eating baked beans, and the other drinking syrup — a full-length collaboration album between British avant singer-songwriter James Blake and psychedelicized Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty might not have been on anyone’s prediction list for 2024. But even knowing both artists’ predilection for the unexpected, it’s a surprisingly symbiotic alliance.

Prime Video’s ‘My Lady Jane’ Is Outlandish, Ahistorical and a Great Bit of Fun: TV Review

Aramide Tinubu In 16th century England, Lady Jane Grey was a 16-year-old girl who became the Queen of England for a paltry nine days before her head was swiftly removed from her body. Historians and fans of the Tudors know this sad tale, but Prime Video‘s “My Lady Jane,” created by Gemma Burgess, isn’t interested in historical facts. Instead, the quippy dramedy, which is based on the best-selling novel by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows, bends and twists Jane’s story.

Why ‘Purple Rain’ Led Prince to Turn His Back on the Superstardom He’d Manifested

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music After your masterplan succeeds and so many of your dreams come true… then what? That is a question a 26-year-old Prince may well have been asking himself after “Purple Rain” transformed him into a global superstar virtually overnight (or whatever passed for “overnight” in 1984). While his rise was gradual — “Purple Rain,” released on this day 40 years ago, was Prince’s sixth album — there’s no disputing the remarkable speed with which his fame skyrocketed during the summer of “Ghostbusters,” the Los Angeles Olympics and “Born in the U.S.A.” Granted, musical careers, like nearly everything else, moved more gradually back then.

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music Justin Timberlake thanked fans in the way most suited for him at his first concert since spending the night in jail after being arrested for DWI earlier this week. “It’s been a tough week,” he said at Chicago’s United Center Friday night, after a long pause filled with cheering from the crowd. “I know sometimes I’m hard to love, but you keep on loving me and I love you right back.” He then led the band into “Selfish,” the first single from his latest album, “Everything I Thought It Was.” He didn’t apologize explicitly or refer directly to the incident, but his sentiment seemed implicit to many vocal members of the audience.

Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge Turn Pain Into Pleasure on NxWorries’ ‘Why Lawd?’: Album Review

John Kennedy Contributor Deep in the second act of NxWorries’ sophomore album, “Why Lawd?,” Anderson .Paak has an epiphany: Maybe monogamy isn’t so bad after all. “I know I said that I cannot choose one / But I’m starting to think you could be all I need,” he enunciates over rapid drum programming. “Girl, I believe you are my one and only.” It’s a low bar for romance, sure, but for the 38-year-old singer/rapper it’s a step in the direction of maturity — even if the breakthrough seems too late to save his songbook love jones.

SZA, Steely Dan, R.E.M., Trey Anastasio, Carrie Underwood and Many More Light up 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music The Songwriters Hall of Fame, which staged its annual awards ceremony on Thursday night, is an institution and an event unlike any other in the music industry, even though many of its elements are hardly unique and many things about it have barely changed over decades, and possibly since it launched in 1969. Indeed, we say many of the same things about the ceremony in an article very similar to this one every year — it’s a combination of an awards show, a family reunion and a trade event that is invite-only yet features a mind-blowing array of Grammy-level, once-in-a-lifetime performances and tributes, always held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York’s Times Square.
