Here's a seemingly simple question pub quiz question: who played Scott Robinson in the Australian soap Neighbours? You might immediately answer 'Jason Donovan', but you'd be mistaken. When Neighbours first aired in March 1985, the character was actually portrayed by a different actor named Darius Perkins. He was one of the original cast members alongside stars like Paul Keane (Des) and Elaine Smith (Daphne).
It's not exactly shocking that producers might decide to recast a character, nor is it surprising that soap viewers rarely seem to notice when it happens. This happened three times with Jason's on-screen sister Lucy Robinson, initially played by Kylie Flinker, then Sasha Close, and finally Melissa Bell. More recently, EastEnders ' Ben Mitchell has been portrayed by six different actors, including Max Bowden.
However, it's Jason Donovan who most people remember as the blonde, mullet-haired, blue-eyed Scott from the late 80s and early 90s. His memorable storylines included his on-screen wedding to TV fiancee Charlene Mitchell (Kylie Minogue), which attracted a UK audience of 20 million. Jason went on to win two prestigious Australian TV Logie Awards for the show, kick-started a pop career, and starred in musical theatre.
For Darius, who was originally cast as Scott at the age of 20 after several previous Australian TV appearances, things turned out a bit differently. Regrettably, Darius's success was short-lived as, less than a year later, producers decided to replace him with Jason to enhance the character's appeal. Following his departure from Neighbours, amidst whispers of persistent lateness, he stepped forth into another Aussie soap, Home And Away, in the role of Gary Samuels.
