Campaigners have told of their 'heartache' as fences installed in Hough End Fields showed the scale of a leisure centre development.
Work is set to begin to to build 3G pitches and a car park on the fields in Withington next month, subject to being given the green light by the council. Campaigners believe the expansion contradicts Manchester City Council's environmental targets.
It comes just weeks after protestors chanted 'shame on you' as councillors agreed to fund the £11.9m plans. Now fences have been installed in the south Manchester beauty spot ahead of a council meeting next month which will decide whether to rubber stamp the plans.

Peter Lythgoe, of the Save Hough End Fields group, said: “It’s jolly sad isn’t it? Especially a perfectly good football pitch, being destroyed in front of your eyes like that in order to make a car park and some plastic football pitches.
“The area that is fenced off now is going to become a car park. I know there are some people who can’t actually bring themselves to go onto the fields because they’d have to look at it, which is very sad.
“The other week, we had a little picnic and I actually marked out on the grass the area that would be taken away for the plastic pitches and it took me 10 minutes to walk around the perimeter of that.
“The area that’s fenced off on the grass now, that’s going to be a car park, looks quite interesting with one lonely set of goal posts. You’ve got the area that’s fenced off around the trees, some of which will be chopped down and in front of that area will be another area, at least four times the size of what is fenced off now.
