Ncuti Gatwa has been spotted filming new Doctor Who scenes in a kilt, paying homage to the actor's Scottish roots.
The Rwandan-born actor, 30, shot to fame as Eric Effiong on Netflix's Sex Education, and will take over the Tardis as the 15th Doctor later this year. Fans of the BBC sci-fi show will know Jodie Whitaker's incarnation as the 13th Doctor regenerated into David Tennant last year, as he re-joined the show for the 60th anniversary specials.
A fan account sharing updates from the Doctor Who set has uploaded a photo to X, formerly Twitter, showing Ncuti in character wearing a kilt. He can be seen posing in a black leather jacket, yellow top and tartan kilt.
Ncuti's first episode as lead actor is set to air in the "festive period" of 2023 while the 14th season of Doctor Who will air in 2024. The tartan kilt appears to be a nod to the actors childhood as he grew up in Scotland after fleeing conflict in Rwanda.
He was a toddler when he and his family moved from Rwanda, while he and his family lived in his father’s university accommodation while he studied a PhD in philosophy and theology.
“They had these accommodations for international families, so there was just a whole big estate with a big garden meadow in the middle. And then there were just kids from all over the world,” he told Teen Vogue.
