The family of ex-gangster Dave Courtney has paid tribute to his “incredible, colourful, rock ‘n’ roll life” after the 64-year-old was found dead at his home in south-east London.
Courtney, who claimed to be an associate of 1960s gangland criminals the Kray twins, swapped an earlier life of crime for writing books in his later years. He was found at his home in Chestnut Rise, Plumstead in south east London on Sunday, having reportedly shot himself.
His family posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that said: “On October 22 2023, Dave made the decision to stop the ride. He had lived an incredible, colourful, rock ‘n’ roll life in which he touched the hearts of so many.

“The physical pain of living the lifestyle he chose, especially due to the pain of both cancer and arthritis in his later years, became too much.”
Fans flocked to social media to pay tribute to Courtney. One person said: “R.I.P. Dave Courtney. A man who was a face on the rave scene from running doors in early days to being in the raves in the late 90s and beyond.
“Such a character and top bloke. Thinking of his family and close ones”.
Another added: “RIP Dave Courtney, legend brav”. A third said: “I met Dave Courtney a few times. He was funny and had a heart of gold. RIP proper old school gentleman.”
Courtney, who was born in Bermondsey but lived in Plumstead, was a member of the Richardson Gang. He has written six books about his delinquent past and was reportedly the inspiration behind Vinnie Jones' character Big Chris in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
