NBC Greenlights Wendi McLendon-Covey Comedy Series ‘St. Denis Medical’

In November, after the likes of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Barbie” vie for box office supremacy this summer, another blockbuster awaits: Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune: Part Two.” If one of those three doesn’t unseat “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as the highest-grossing film on 2023, Villeneuve’s sequel surely will.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the newly elected Board of Governors for the 2023-2024 year. Elected to the board for the first time are acclaimed actor Lou Diamond Phillips, screenwriter Dana Stevens, executive Hannah Minghella, costume designer Daniel Orlandi and more. Among the newly elected is technology executive Wendy Aylsworth, who will represent the brand new Production and Technology Branch. Aylsworth, who also serves on the Board of Governors for the Television Academy, spent more than two decades at Warner Bros. and became the first woman president of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

After years and years of writing comedy films with mixed success (for every “Hangover” there’s a “Superhero Movie”), Craig Mazin has found his place as one of the best creators on television, thanks to the success of both “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us.” And apparently, with his renewed passion for TV, it appears he’s willing to put the film business behind him.

American Auto may be gone, but costar Ana Gasteyer will always remember it with gratitude.

Selome Hailu “American Auto” has been canceled after two seasons on NBC. Created by Justin Spitzer, “American Auto” was a workplace comedy following the executives of Detroit-based Payne Motors as they struggle to adapt to the changing times, all the while being led by the company’s first female CEO, Katherine Hastings (Ana Gasteyer). Along with Gasteyer, the cast included Harriet Dyer as Sadie Ryan, Jon Barinholtz as Wesley Payne, Humphrey Ker as Elliot Chisholm, Michael B. Washington as Cyrus Knight, Tye White as Jack Fortin and X Mayo as Dori Ovens. Season 2 was averaging 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49 according to Nielsen’s Live + 7 data from late April.

NBC is revisiting Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom with a new iteration of the iconic wildlife show set for premiere this fall.

Amber Dowling Marblemedia has wrapped production on the upcoming half-hour teen comedy series “Davey & Jonesie’s Locker,” Variety confirms. The 10-episode, single-camera series filmed in Toronto and has been co-commissioned by Prime Video in Canada, Australia and New Zealand and Hulu in the U.S. “Davey & Jonesie’s Locker” hails from showrunner Evany Rosen (“New Eden,” “Baroness Von Sketch Show”) and follows two best friends, Davey and Jonesie, who feel “out of step with their peers and the banal backdrops of their high school existence.” When they discover their locker is actually a portal to a multiverse, they set off on new adventures. The joke? Those adventures entail alternate versions of their high school, with offbeat iterations of their classmates.

NBC has announced two new cancellations, and also revealed which new show will be included in the upcoming 2023-2024 television season.

It will be a quick return to network primetime for Wendi McLendon-Covey. NBC has picked up to series St. Denis Medical, its single-camera workplace comedy starring The Goldbergs alumna and veteran David Alan Grier.

Selome Hailu NBC has given a series order to “St. Denis Medical,” a comedy series hailing from “Superstore” and “American Auto” creator Justin Spitzer alongside Eric Ledgin, who also wrote and executive produced on both shows. Per the official logline, the series is “a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.” Wendi McLendon-Covey stars as Joyce, St. Denis’ executive director and former oncological surgeon who has big dreams for the future of the hospital, though those dreams are not currently being realized. And as reported exclusively by Variety, Allison Tolman will play Alex, the supervising nurse in St. Denis’ emergency department who is dedicated to providing excellent care to her patients, often sacrificing her personal life to maintain her high standards.

Whoa. Guess this is why Wendy Williams‘ son Kevin Hunter Jr. is feeling so helpless right now.
