Glamour, we've written about how its and named its . But just what is the story behind MUTHA's design and proven ingredients? For , it was personal. “I'm an esthetician and I need something bold and brave, just like the name, MUTHA.
I really wanted to earn that spot on your vanity, and when you see it, you like it, and you're reminded to use it, almost like a reminder to take care of yourself and have that ritualistic time,” Smith tells Glamour from Palm Beach, Florida, where she splits time between her family's home and the MUTHA offices in Chelsea, New York. But aside from standing out on your vanity, the brand's signature look goes deeper than just being eye candy. “I was newly pregnant at the time and having an identity crisis a little bit because I felt everything was treating me like [I] was this like soft, delicate flower,” Smith says. “I was no longer this bold, independent woman.
So I said, if this is ever going to be a brand, it has to be like bold and modern for today's woman. I didn't want to be treated like I'm so soft just because I'm with child or carrying a baby. And so a play on the word mother with ‘mutha’ just felt very bold.”The packaging and name was one of the last step's in the creation of the brand, but it was Smith's relentless obsession with finding the best products with the most good-for-you ingredients that led her down this path to begin with.
As many of her devotees know, MUTHA really did start in Smith's kitchen with a double boiler and her trusty Kitchen-Aid. “This was never going to be a brand,” she says. In fact, it only came about when she was looking for a product to help minimize her stretch marks, which she says was an insecurity of hers as a pre-teen.
