A mum who was not told her epilepsy medication would cause serious birth defects says she cannot escape the guilt for ‘wrecking’ her son’s life despite it not being her fault.
Doctors only told Jade Wright about the dangers of the epilepsy drug Epilim after her son, Tyler, was born - by then it was too late.
Jade had been taking Epilim, a brand of the epilepsy drug sodium valproate, for almost 30 years after being diagnosed as a child. Although the medication had been effective for her condition, the 34-year-old mum had no idea of its potentially horrific side-effects, LancsLive reports.

When she fell pregnant in 2005, Jade, from Burscough, was under the care of a consultant neurologist at the Walton Centre in Liverpool. She says she was never given "adequate warnings" about how the medication could affect her unborn child.
"I remember seeing my consultant neurologist about a month before I became pregnant," Jade told LancsLive.
"He touched upon the side effects being spina bifida, but said that was the same with all anti-epilepsy medication. All he said was, rest assured if you do become pregnant, continue on your medication but just take folic acid to decrease the risks. He made me feel like that was safe."
Jade had no reason to assume she shouldn't be taking Epilim. Regardless, today she can't help but feel she is partly responsible for the effect the drug had on her son.
She added: "It doesn't seem to take away the guilt for some reason. I know I took that medication and I took medication that completely wrecked his life and his future."
