Monty Don has shared a "secret" gardening hack to keep roses thriving, but only if it's done every day.
With June underway, the gardening legend has shared a new blog on all the jobs gardeners should do this month to ensure a glorious outdoor space. said that "it is impossible to celebrate June without speaking of roses". Indeed, it is the month where the flowers peak for blooming, but can wilt quickly if not properly looked after.
Luckily, the former BBC Gardener's World host has shared a secret to keep "any rose flowering as long as possible" which is to "dead-head" the blooms "daily". The term refers to removing dead leaves from plants, which encourages more blooms, while keeping the plant itself looking attractive.
When it comes to dead-heading roses, this process involves removing finished blooms and not just leaves. This should be repeated on flowering shrub roses and shrubs that once flowered but are not sprouting hips.
Explaining how to dead-head roses properly, Monty advised: "Do not just pull off the spent petals but use secateurs and cut the spent stem right back to the next leaf or bud below it - however far down that is. This will provoke a side-shoot which in turn will carry more flowers."
However, he stressed that certain roses should be left alone if you want your plant to produce hips in the autumn season.
Monty added: "Some roses, especially the species such as rosa rugosa or rosa moysii, have glorious hips in autumn and these will only develop if the flowers are allowed to set seed and fruit, so enjoy the flowers as long as they last and do not dead head so that they can develop into fruit."
In addition to dead-heading roses, Monty previously explained why gardeners should delay cutting the grass until later

Kate Aurthur administrator Two days before Season 4 of “The Boys” premiered on June 13, showrunner Eric Kripke announced on social media that the upcoming fifth season of the Prime Video series for Amazon will be its last. Kripke hedged on the question when asked about it for this interview, which took place a few weeks before his announcement; but he did state clearly that he doesn’t want “The Boys” ever to be “turning into the thing that we’re parodying” — that is, an endless stream of superhero content that has flooded pop culture for years. “It’d be a huge bummer if of all shows, this is the show that sells out,” Kripke said, “so I’m going to try.” Of course, the end of “The Boys” next season won’t mean the end of the whole universe around the show, which is based on the comics series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
