Building a successful business out of a hobby has been transformative for profoundly deaf Thomas Wooding. The 26-year-old and his partner Josh Moss started T&J Scents five years ago after his homemade candles were a hit with friends and family.
They sell a luxurious range of fragrance and candles, which are hand poured in Thomas' workshop. They are made from the finest natural soy wax and fragrance oils.
Thomas' creativity has helped the business thrive but it was a steep learning curve. He spent a year or more researching everything to produce natural, vegan friendly products.
Everything is done in-house by this family business, from making the products, to the stickers, packaging and posting. Thomas is supported by Josh and family members.
It all began when they discovered Thomas' asthma and his health were being adversely affected by candles they were buying, so they set about trying to find an alternative.
Friends and family began asking him to make some for them and they decided to launch it as a business.
Making his own candles helped give Thomas a focus as he was struggling to find a job. However quickly friends and family were asking him to make them and so he decided to launch it as a business.
Josh said: “I created a website and put a couple of products on there, they started selling and then just over the past couple of years really it's just been kind of word of mouth.
“We never imagined it would be as big as it is, that Thomas would have to work there six days a week. We initially thought of it as something to do on the side, to give Thomas something to do to keep his mind off things.
“We never expected in a million years that it would grow into this business, shipping all over the UK and America.”
