Manchester United are set to play rivals Leeds United on Wednesday as their pre-season campaign kicks off in Oslo. Among those who will be motivated to make a statement during the game is Matej Kovar, a young goalkeeper looking to become the first backup option for the 2023/24 season.
Kovar has been at United since he was 17, but now aged 23 he’s still yet to make a senior appearance. But his loan move back to his native Czech Republic might have brought him back into Erik tenHag's thinking.
He played for Sparta Prague where he would already be familiar with some teammates, having played with them at national U21 level, but would join them during a miserable run of form. He immediately became their number 1 choice, starting after only one training session with them.

Although he claimed responsibility for the loss of the second goal in that game, it was pretty much the only error he made in the entire spell, and Kovar was instrumental in Sparta winning their first league title in 9 years, secured in a game against his former club in the town where he was born. He would also be voted goalkeeper of the season, after securing 10 clean sheets.
It’s possible that being comfortable in his home country got him to levels he might not reach in England, but Kovar showed himself up to the task of being a solid goalkeeper. He was praised for not only his shot-stopping, which saw him not concede throughout the whole of November, but his distribution that helped Sparta get forward quickly.
