Manchester United are exploring options to appoint another senior professional to the role of player and coach in their under-21s set-up after hailing the innovation as a success.
Former Premier League midfielder Tom Huddlestone has spent the past two seasons fulfilling the role and he scored in the Premier League 2 win against Manchester City in February.
Huddlestone's role was to provide advice to young players during games, as well as coaching during the week, and he replaced his former Hull City teammate Paul McShane in the job. McShane spent a year playing and coaching the team, before accepting a role as lead academy coach for the under-15s. He has since also joined the backroom staff in the Republic of Ireland Under-21s set-up.

Huddlestone made eight appearances in Premier League 2 this season, as well as coming off the bench for the final eight minutes of the 4-3 defeat to Salford City in the EFL Trophy. He announced his departure from United last month but the club have now confirmed his exit when releasing their retained list.
