The Premier League has confirmed clubs will be allowed to make five substitutions from next season.
Clubs were permitted to make five changes for the remainder of the 2019-20 season after its restart following a three-month shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the majority of clubs voted to revert to the three-subs rule at the start of last season.
However, the Premier League confirmed the permanent rule change to five substitutions from the start of the 2022-23 season. The rule is already in place in the other four major leagues in Europe.

In a statement, the Premier League said: "Clubs agreed to change the rules relating to substitute players. From next season, clubs will be permitted to use five substitutions, to be made on three occasions during a match, with an additional opportunity at half-time. A total of nine substitutes can be named on the team sheet."
United were believed to be in favour of keeping the five-subs rule at the start of last term. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick also voiced his support for its reintroduction in December.
"As far as I remember, the five substitutes were implemented, it was decided every team could substitute five players when Covid started one-and-a-half years ago and I think it was the right decision to do that, to have more options to change players, to save energy for players, especially if they had only just recovered from Covid," Rangnick said.
"And the same is true right now, we have a similar situation to the one we had one-and-a-half years ago and therefore I wouldn't see any reason why it shouldn't be as it was one-and-a-half years ago.
