England Women have lost the Women's World Cup final, making Spain world champions. The European champions lost 1-0 to Spain, in the historic final at Sydney's Stadium Australia. England started the game well, as they seemed to have quashed any nerves when Lauren Hemp hit the crossbar on the 15 minute mark. Just minuets later, Lionesses keeper Mary Earps made a sensational save to deny Salma Paralluelo from five yards out.
It was Spain who went ahead first, through a fine finish from Olga Carmona just before the half hour mark. England started to get frustrated as they struggled to make chances, and in the 41st minute Ella Toone was inches away from putting the ball in the back of the net. Just before the half time break, Spain had the chance to double their lead as Salma Paralluelo hit the post from just yards out.
At the break, England manager Sarina Wiegman decided it was time for a change as she brought on Lauren James and Chloe Kelly for Alessia Russo and Rachel Daly. The changes also meant that, England went for plan B as the defense changed from a back five to a back four. However, plan b didn't work straight away as just moments later, Mariona Caldentey forced Mary Earps into a superb save with her strike from distance. England did respond, and a perfect cross from Chloe Kelly in the 54th minute provided Lauren Hemp with a great chance, but she put it wide. The drama stepped a notch once again with just over 20 minutes to go when Spain were awarded a penalty for a Keira Walsh handball.
However, Mary Earps became a hero once again as she saved Jenni Hermoso's penalty. There was still a chance for England to turn the game around as the fourth official added on 13 minutes. Sadly England, just couldn't find a way through
