Manchester City are closing in on making Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic their first signing of the summer transfer window.
City might be coming off the back of their crowning achievement after winning the Champions League to secure a historic treble just two weeks ago but attentions have already turned to the forthcoming campaign. Pep Guardiola is looking to make his squad even better which begins with the signing of Kovacic to bolster his midfield ranks.
It's understood the Croatian underwent a medical on Friday and providing there is no issues should be confirmed as a City player in the coming week. City will pay a guaranteed £25million to Chelsea which could rise by a further £5million as the London club look to balance their books after unprecedented spending last season under their new owners.
Though he is not seen as a direct replacement, Kovacic arrives at the Etihad as Ilkay Gundogan departs. The club captain was instrumental in the treble triumph but has decided to bring his time at City to an end and sign with Barcelona on a free transfer.

City are looking to bring another midfielder in to make up for the loss of the important German and have shown a keen interest in Declan Rice, though they are yet to make it concrete with a bid. With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Kyle Walker, the Blues may yet have to recruit a centre-back, full-back and forward.
But Kovacic will almost certainly be the first through the door and the early conclusion of the deal means he will be able to join his new teammates for the beginning of pre-season and the upcoming tour
