A young man wis fighting for his life after being knocked down on Scotland’s busiest motorway. Emergency services were called to the scene on the westbound carriageway of the M8, near Harthill, shortly after 4pm on Monday, October 17.
Officers locked down the scene for more than five hours after the crash, which involved a grey Renault Trafic SL28, a Volkswagen Crafter van and the 26-year-old pedestrian. The injured man was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to life-threatening injuries.
A picture from the scene shows the helicopter after it landed on the carriageway in front of queuing traffic. A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident but released pending further enquiries.
Investigators are now keen to speak with any rush hour motorists who may have dash cam footage that could assist with their probe.
Sergeant Scott Sutherland, of Motherwell’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may be able to help to get in touch.
“We would be especially keen to hear from anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the incident. Anyone with information or footage can contact officers on 101, quoting incident number 2210 of 17 October, 2022.
“I’d also like to thank the motorists who were affected by the road closure for their patience while we carried out our investigation.”
Motorists faced lengthy delays and diversions while officers carried out enquiries at the scene, with the road eventually reopened at around 9.35pm yesterday.
