A man has died in hospital following a 'serious' road crash on the A78 near Inverkip. The alarm was raised shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday, October 14 when officers were alerted to the two-car smash.
Emergency services raced to the scene of the collision, which involved a Toyota Yaris and VW Golf and two male drivers were rushed to hospital by ambulance.
Tragically, officers have confirmed that the 59-year-old male driver of the Toyota Yaris has since died in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
The 22-year-old driver of the VW Golf remains in the same hospital for treatment, where staff there describe his condition as 'serious'.
The road was closed overnight in both directions between Inverkip and Wemyss Bay while cops launched a probe into the incident. It reopened around 9am.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 11.25 pm on Saturday, 15 October 2022, police were called to a serious road crash involving a Toyota Yaris and VW Golf on the A78 near Inverkip.
"The 59-year-old male driver of the Toyota Yaris was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he has since died. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
"The 22-year-old man, the driver of the VW Golf, remains for treatment at the same hospital where medical staff describe his condition as serious.
"There were no other passengers in either car. "Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. "The road was re-opened around 9am.”
