Marks and Spencer has apologised after an outtake from its Christmas advert caused upset. The image, showing paper hats in the colours of the Palestinian flag burning in a fire, was meant to "playfully show that some people don't enjoy wearing paper Christmas hats", according to M&S.
The picture was shared on social media with the caption: "This Christmas, do what you love... like saying no to paper hats" and "#LoveThismasNotThatmas." However, some people saw a resemblance between the colours of the hats and the Palestinian flag, leading to criticism.
One person responded to the post, saying: "This is absolutely vile, you should be ashamed of yourselves." Another added: "Absolutely disgusting. Even if it was recorded in August you should have reshot this image or used technology to make changes. Shame on you!!!"

A user on X, formerly Twitter, asked: "How come you have that much hate to deliver disguised as 'Christmas celebration'?" M&S explained that the clip was filmed in August, long before recent conflicts.
M&S shared a statement on Wednesday night: "Today we shared an outtake image from our Christmas Clothing and Home advert, which was recorded in August." They added, "It showed traditional, festive coloured red, green and silver Christmas paper party hats in a fire grate."
The intent behind the post was to playfully show that some people just don't enjoy wearing paper Christmas hats over the festive season. However, M&S has removed the post
