The Los Angeles Lakers honored one of the city’s greats tonight, hosting a brief tribute before the team’s National Basketball Association game against the Chicago Bulls at Staples Center.

Tom LaBonge, an ebullient city councilman who served a district spanning Hollywood, the Universal City area, and the Greek Theater in Los Feliz from 2001 to 2015, died Thursday of unknown causes at his Silver Lake home. He was 67 and was known as “Mr. Los Angeles” for his vast knowledge of the city and its history.

Investigators in Los Angeles are searching for a man caught on surveillance video this week killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her 3-year-old daughter, authorities said.   The video, released by the Los Angeles Police Department, shows Karen Ruiz, 35, getting out of a vehicle just after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday as another car pulls in behind her on a residential driveway.
