California Governor Gavin Newsom announced this afternoon that the state’s long-running, Covid-related State of Emergency will end on February 28, 2023. That’s basically three years after it began on March 4, 2020.

It’s been more than four months since Los Angeles County’s Covid State of Emergency officially ended, and a lot has changed. People have stopped wearing masks, public places are bustling again and even the most cautious public officials have relaxed their rhetoric. Most importantly, unlike the previous three years, there was no significant summer spike in cases. Fall, however, may be a slightly different story.

More than three years after they were instituted, Los Angeles County’s local emergency declarations due to Covid will be lifted at the end of the day today. The move comes six weeks after California quietly ended its own state of emergency and one day after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced that Hollywood’s Covid protocols will expire on May 12.

After very close to three years and more than 100,000 deaths related to Covid, the nation’s largest state ends its State of Emergency related to the pandemic at 11:59 p.m. tonight.

President Joe Biden informed Congress today that he would be ending the dual states of emergency that were declared to help address the Covid pandemic, according to multiple sources. There are currently a public health emergency and a national emergency related to the virus, both of which were extended recently. The declarations will be lifted on May 11, reported the Washington Post, and reclassify Covid as an endemic threat.
