A popular spy thriller with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score has been renewed for a fifth season on Apple TV.

K.J. Yossman Gary Oldman’s band of MI5 misfits are set to return for another outing. “Slow Horses,” the hit Apple TV+ series based on Mick Herron’s spy series of the same name, has been renewed for a fifth season, Variety can confirm.

Apple TV+ is returning once again to Slow Horses, with a fifth season greenlit, the first major renewal of 2024.

Slow Horses returns for its third season in November.Based on the Slough House novels by Mick Herron, the Apple TV+ series stars Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, the head of Slough House where MI5 service rejects are lumped with dull administrative tasks.Other cast members include Jack Lowden as MI5 agent River Cartwright and Kristin Scott Thomas as MI5 deputy director-general, Diana Taverner.A synopsis for the third season reads: “In season three, a romantic liaison in Istanbul threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. When Jackson Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the fight, they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI5 itself.”The first two episodes premiere Wednesday November 29 on Apple TV+, with the remaining four episodes set to be released weekly from this date.In the US, episodes usually arrive on Apple TV+ around 12am ET, which translates to 5am GMT in the UK.A trailer for the third season was released earlier this month – check it out above.Slow Horses was renewed for a third and fourth season in June last year.

Slow Horses is “a huge step up in terms of the scale and the level of action” fans can expect to see from the new season, according to the show’s showrunner, executive producer and writer, Will Smith.Smith, who also wrote for The Thick Of It and Veep, told NME ahead of season three’s release that despite the increased action, it was still important that Slow Horses “felt like the same show” and that it “didn’t suddenly go off into feeling like it was just generic action.” He continued: “We still felt like it was our characters involved in it, and it still had the humour and the drama: it still felt like our show.”The group of disgraced MI5 rejects are back in a new series which sees the addition of Gangs of London star Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, whose partner is killed in mysterious circumstances while both are working for MI5. “Oh I love Ṣọpẹ́, he’s an amazing actor,” Smith says.

And if there’s any confirmation of what fans can anticipate from Season 2, it’s that “more people are going to die,” according to a voice-over in the trailer from returning star Jack Lowden. In the new season of “Slow Horses” (which is adapted from Mick Herron’s sequel novel “Dead Lion”), when exposure of previously-concealed Cold War secrets creates tension between Russia and Britain, the spies are again tasked with protecting society from inevitable catastrophe. Most spy thrillers rely on action-oriented scenes with flashy camera movements, but Slow Horses presented a different option that interested cinematographer Danny Cohen. In what Cohen calls an “anti-spy thriller”, the challenge was to pull back on the flashy moves to highlight the dialogue and acting.

More “Slow Horses” is on the way. Apple TV+ announced Wednesday it had ordered Seasons 3 and 4 of the spy drama.Season 1 recently finished its run, and Season 2 has already been filmed, but doesn’t yet have a premiere date.Seasons 3 and 4 will adapt the next two novels in Mick Herron’s “Slough House” series.Season 3 will see Jackson Lamb’s (Gary Oldman) disgraced spies working together to foil a rogue agent when one of their own is kidnapped, per the streamer.

Then, a couple of hours into the six-episode season, the show tries to turn everything we thought we knew inside out.
