Kanye West sparks new controversy with comments about death of George Floyd

Kanye West has sparked another controversy after making comments about the death of George Floyd. Floyd, a Black man, was killed following an altercation with a white police officer in Minneapolis in May 2020.Distressing footage emerged soon after Floyd’s altercation with police which showed him being restrained on the ground by Derek Chauvin, who placed his knee on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes. Despite Floyd’s continued pleas that he couldn’t breathe, Chauvin continued to apply pressure to Floyd’s neck. A lack of oxygen caused brain damage, heart failure and eventually death. In April 2021, Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of Floyd and he was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Now, in a new appearance on Drink Champs podcast, West has claimed that Floyd died from “Fentanyl” and said that a police officer’s knee “wasn’t even on his neck like that.” West made the comments while discussing Candace Owens’s documentary The Greatest Lie Ever Sold: George Floyd and the Rise of BLM.“They hit him with the fentanyl, if you look the guys knew wasn’t even on his neck like that,” West claimed. He went on to compare Floyd to designer Virgil Abloh, who died from cancer last November before going on to attack the “Jewish media” who he claims “blocked” him.“Tell me could you even rally run this interview? Mav (Maverick Carter) didn’t even run my interview, they blocked me out, the Jewish media blocked me out.

‘Not helping the community’: George Floyd roommates, others slam BLM in new film

real-estate buying binge of its founder was exposed by The Post, a new documentary dives deep into the murky finances of the Black Lives Matter Global Foundation — and meets some of the people it allegedly harmed.“The Greatest Lie Ever Sold,” a film spearheaded by controversial conservative commentator Candace Owens, premiered Wednesday in Nashville at a screening attended by Kanye West, Ray J and Kid Rock.In the documentary, the Daily Wire host examines what Patrisse Cullors, BLM’s self-described ‘”trained Marxist” co-founder, did with the $90 million that her group amassed after the May 2020 slaying of George Floyd, the Black man whose cries of “I can’t breathe” set off global protests when he died under the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer.Cullors resigned from the national non-profit in 2021, a month after The Post revealed she had spent millions on real estate in the previous months — and the organization has remained mired in financial scandal. Cullors said her departure was unrelated to those “attacks,” and that she was leaving to focus on a book and TV deal. BLM has denied that any wrongdoing occurred. Black Lives Matter, Owens charges, is “a fraudulent organization that … uses black emotion and black pain to extort dollars from white America.”In the film’s most poignant moments, people who claim their lives were harmed by BLM and its supporters speak out.None of BLM’s $90 million bounty helped the couple who shared the last four years of Floyd’s life.Housemates Alvin Manago and Theresa Scott lived with Floyd in a tidy red two-story home on a corner lot in Minneapolis’s leafy Minikahda Vista neighborhood.“He was a people person,” Manago tells the filmmakers of Floyd.

Seattle inspector general rips police for amplifying 2020 'autonomous zone' danger

Seattle’s Office of Inspector General released an 81-page review slamming how the police handled the riots of 2020, focusing on its handling of the Capitol Hill Occupied Zone.  The report, released Tuesday by city inspector general Lisa Judge, focuses on 23 days in June, shortly after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, which set off protests and riots across the country.  Seattle’s summer of unrest was highlighted by an eight-block "cop-free" zone known as the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest or the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone that demonstrators established after police abandoned the East Precinct building in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The inspector general’s office found the occupation revealed a dysfunctional relationship between the city administration, led by then-Mayor Jenny Durkan, and the police department, led by then-Police Chief Carmen Best.

Black Music Action Coalition Readies Second Annual Gala in Beverly Hills, Looks to Nashville for Future Advocacy

Thania Garcia In spring 2020, the U.S. came to terms with its role in racial inequality on the heels of a tragedy: the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. That singular moment compelled many, including those in the music business, to pledge funds and action. It also gave birth to the Black Music Action Coalition, a collective of Black creators, activists and change-makers who have diligently kept the issue in the headlines and on the minds of corporate parents.  On Sept. 22, the organization — whose leadership includes industry veterans Damien Smith, Caron Veazey and Shawn Holiday, among others — celebrates its second annual Music in Action gala in Beverly Hills, where honorees include Lil Baby, Sony Music Publishing chairman Jon Platt, 300 Elektra Entertainment’s Kevin Liles and 1619 Project creator Nikole Hannah-Jones. It promises to be a gathering of heavies, as last year’s inaugural fete — Variety is a media sponsor — drew the Weeknd, Motown chairwoman Ethiopia Habtemariam and attorney Ben Crump.

Bill Pohlad On Dreaming Big At Venice With Casey Affleck-Starrer ‘Dreamin’ Wild’

Stalwart indie filmmaker Bill Pohlad today premeres in Venice Dreamin’ Wild. His directing follow up to the critically acclaimed Brian Wilson film Love & Mercy also follows a music story, though one far less familiar. Casey Affleck, Noah Jupe, Zooey Deschanel, Walton Goggins and Beau Bridges star. When Donnie Emerson (played by Affleck and Jupe) was a teenager growing up on his father’s farm in Fruitland, Washington (population 791) he spent his days writing music and dreaming of becoming a music star. And everyone in the family became invested in that dream, including his brother Joe (Goggins) who became his drummer, and especially his father, Don Sr (Bridges). He mortgaged his farm to build a $100,000 recording studio, and more to help Donnie make and release his first record. It went nowhere and the bulk of the farm had to be sold when the loan came due. But 30 years later, the overlooked album was rediscovered by the music scene. Suddenly Donnie, who continued to struggle and write and play his music, had gotten a taste of his childhood dreams. But it comes with the guilt of failure that haunted him for years, and involves having to play the songs that meant something as a teen, but not as a 50 year old man who has evolved as a musician. And it is all true.

‘Love in the Villa’ Review: Kat Graham and Tom Hopper Make a Reservation for Amore in This Amiable Rom-Com

Courtney Howard It’s a little ironic that the fair-minded maiden in “Love in the Villa” yearns for an authentic, romantic Italian vacation since her fairy tale has been cobbled together by Netflix’s practically patented algorithm. Take one part down-on-her-luck female protagonist, add in a handsome-but-cantankerous gentleman either from or in an enchanting European setting, and mix with a generous splash of high jinks that force them to fall head over heels. Yet the blessed surprise awaiting even the most cynical of audiences of writer-director Mark Steven Johnson’s romantic comedy is that within the manufactured product lies a heartening appeal to its sensible delight.  Elementary school teacher Julie (Kat Graham), who is obsessed with “Romeo and Juliet,” has planned the trip of a lifetime with her boyfriend of four years, Brandon (Raymond Ablack). Their jaunt to Verona, Italy, includes everything from reservations at the finest restaurants to themed tours, all while staying in a villa that faces the balcony that inspired the famous scene in Shakespeare’s play. However, despite factoring in a sliver of spontaneity, Julie did not foresee Brandon getting cold feet and dumping her right before they’re to depart. Rather than mope in Minneapolis, she decides to go on the vacation alone.

‘Traveling Light’ Review: Stuck in Close Quarters, Staving Off COVID and Boredom

Rene Rodriguez Shot during the pandemic and set on May 30, 2020 — just a few days after the death of George Floyd during an arrest by the Minneapolis Police Department — “Traveling Light” is an experimental attempt at social commentary that fails to provide any insight, emotion or even entertainment of the most basic kind. Nearly a year after its weird-fit premiere at genre-focused Beyond Fest in Los Angeles, this scrappy COVID-era quickie from eclectic director Bernard Rose (who made the original “Candyman”) opens today in New York and Seattle, with other cities to follow. It seems Rose was aiming for a loose riff on “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,” focusing on a gathering in the Hollywood Hills of the followers of a self-proclaimed guru/prophet (Danny Huston), where everyone drinks a concoction spiked with an unnamed hallucinogenic and eventually line-dances while chanting “Hare Hare,” even though there isn’t a single Hare Krishna in sight.
