Bruce Springsteen has released ‘Nightshift’, a cover of the Commodores original, lifted from the singer’s forthcoming album.‘Nightshift’ first appeared on the tracklist of Commodores’ titular 1985 album, and was written as a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson (both of whom died the year prior). For his part, Springsteen stays true to the original, carrying the soulful tune atop a supporting band of brass, strings and backing vocalists.The track is accompanied by a music video directed by longtime Springsteen collaborator Thom Zimny.

Thundercat has recorded a cover of Ryuichi Sakamoto‘s ‘Thousand Knives’, the title track from the Japanese composer’s 1978 solo debut – listen to it below.The cover is part of a new compilation that pays tribute to Sakamoto,in celebration of his 70th birthday. ‘A Tribute To Ryuichi Sakamoto: To The Moon And Back’ is due out on December 2 via Milan Records.Thundercat’s bass-laden take on ‘Thousand Knives’ is about half the length of Sakamoto’s vocoder-heavy original, with brand-new English lyrics fitting with the melody.It’s the first single from the album, with other artists to appear including Devonté Hynes (AKA Blood Orange), Fennesz, David Sylvian, Cornelius, and the Cinematic Orchestra.Last month, Sakamoto shared two new songs that were made for the Netflix anime series Exception.

They are also available as part of a limited edition seven-inch and a cassette tape version of the album.‘Oceans Of Darkness’ is a driving, bright song that finds frontman Adam Granduciel singing: “I was tired of waiting / Pulling along / Feeling misunderstood / When I throw it away / Into these oceans of darkness / Come pulling me back for good.” ‘Slow Ghost’, meanwhile, takes a slower, softer form, Granduciel singing gently over melancholy guitar melodies.

Sleater-Kinney have confirmed details of the forthcoming ‘Dig Me Out’ covers album – listen to Courtney Barnett‘s version of ‘Words And Guitar’ below.The album, a full-length, covers-based recreation of the rock trio’s 1997 album, was first touted earlier this year, with the likes of St. Vincent, Wilco, The Linda Lindas and TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe confirmed to contribute.Now, the record has been given a title (‘Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album’) and release date (October 21) as well as a full tracklist being revealed.In a statement, Sleater-Kinney said: “The artists who appear on ‘Dig Me In’ have not so much covered the 13 original songs, but reinterpreted and reimagined them.“Through added layers or the subtraction of guitars and drums, they provide a new way into the songs. Fresh rage, joy, pain, reclamation, slyness, and longing.
