Each year there's a host of baby names that rise in popularity, and consequently there's also a collection of monikers that become increasingly unpopular as a result. Some traditional names have remained a firm favourite amongst new parents for decades, while others have slowly been pushed to the bottom of the list. There's now a series of classic names which are classed as 'extinct', as parents continue to choose more modern monikers.
Language school Babbel analysed records from the Office for National Statistics from across the last century, comparing parents' name choices in 2020 to the top 100 most popular names between 1914 and 1994. A vast collection of much-loved names have seemingly died out over the years, and are now deemed 'extinct'. Names such as Graeme, Horace, Iain, Nigel, and Royston were all extinct in 2020, as well as Carol, Jill, Kerry, Lyndsey, and Mandy. There's also a large amount of traditional monikers which are currently at-risk of becoming extinct - those which were used less than 10 times for newborns in 2020.
Annette, Cheryl, Denise, Janet, Kirsty and Pamela are all becoming less popular, as well as Beryl, Carolyn, Jean, Sheila, and Tracy. Endangered boys' names include the likes of Gary, Graham, Keith, Stuart, Rodney, and Gordon. "Naming practices form the basis of all language as well as the basis of identity," Ted Mentele, Editor in Didactics at Babbel, said.
