NYC’s drill rap scene: “Eric Adams is pushing the NYPD stigma against drill music”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ recent call to pull drill music from the internet.Earlier this month, Adams said during a press conference that after seeing “alarming” drill music videos, he felt they should no longer be shared on social media.“We pulled Trump off Twitter because of what he was spewing,” the former NYPD officer said at the time. “Yet we are allowing music, displaying of guns, violence, we’re allowing it to stay on these sites.”Adams added: “We are going to pull together the social media companies, and state that you have a civic and corporate responsibility.”The Mayor also said he was “alarmed by the use of social media” by drill rappers before blaming the music for “contributing to the violence we are seeing all over this country.”According to NBC New York, shootings year to date are reportedly up 37 per cent in the city versus this same period in 2021 – an average of nearly four people shot every day. However, drill artists and rap culture experts have spoken to NME about how they don’t agree with Adams – and believe there’s an agenda behind his call to ban the genre.“Drill music is our form of art,” Jeffrey Mark Alexander, who performs as 22Gz told NME.

after he recently spoke out against “alarming” drill music.Adams, who took office last month as the 110th mayor of New York City, said last week that he wanted to sit down with social media companies to “state that you have a civic and corporate responsibility” in regards to promoting drill music.“You know, I mean, we pulled Trump off Twitter because of what he was spewing, yet we are allowing music – displaying of guns, violence – we’re allowing it to stay on these sites,” he added. On Tuesday (February 15), Adams met with the likes of Fivio Foreign, Maino, B-Lovee, Slow Bucks and Bleezy to discuss public safety in the city and the gun violence that is impacting the hip-hop community (via ABC News).Speaking to reporters yesterday (February 16), Adams said that the group came to the meeting “with a lot of energy” and were concerned that the mayor intended to “ban” drill music.A post shared by JERMAINE (@mainohustlehard)Adding that he had “a great conversation” with the group, Adams said that he was primarily concerned by drill rappers who make violent threats to their rivals in their music.“Violent people who are using drill rapping to post who they killed, and then antagonise the people who they are going to kill, is what the problem is.”In a video from the meeting that was shared on Instagram, the rapper Maino says: “There’s been a lot of talk about drill rap, drill music in New York City, connecting violence with the culture, and I just wanted to create a conversation with the mayor.”The clip then sees Adams add: “We’re going to roll out something together on the whole conversation, and we’re looking forward to it.”You can see a selection of social media posts from Adams’ meeting with the rappers below.A post shared by

How much should rappers worry about Eric Adams’ war on drill?

In an off-topic Q&A following a Friday press conference on pay raises for essential gig workers, a reporter asked New York City Mayor Eric Adams for his thoughts on the relationship between the city's violent crime rate and drill music. The rap subgenre's violent lyrics and street-focused aesthetic make it an easy target for politicians, and Adams' response has prompted concern from some in the hip-hop and legal communities who feel it reflects a long tradition of criminalizing rap. "I had no idea what drill rapping was, but I called my son, and he sent me some videos, and it is alarming," Mayor Adams said.
