Labour has won the Blackpool South parliamentary by-election and made gains in council contests to heap pressure on Rishi Sunak.
In the contest triggered by the resignation of former Tory MP Scott Benton following a lobbying scandal, Labour’s Chris Webb secured 10,825 votes, a majority of 7,607. Tory David Jones came in second with 3,218 votes, just 117 ahead of Reform UK’s Mark Butcher, which is the party's best ever performance in a by-election.
Labour's win means the Conservatives have now lost 11 parliamentary by-elections since the 2019 general election.

Speaking after his win, Mr Webb said: "The people of Blackpool South have spoken for Britain. They have said to Rishi Sunak and to the Conservatives, they've had enough. They've had enough of 14 years the Conservatives have been in power.
"They have lost trust in the British people and Blackpool have had enough of this failed government - they've crashed the economy, destroyed our public services and put up taxes.
"They have said that it's time for change and that change started here in Blackpool tonight. Only Labour offers hope for towns like Blackpool. We need change and we will get it under a Labour government."
He added: "People no longer trust the Conservatives. Prime Minister: do the decent thing, admit you’ve failed and call a general election."
The by-election was called after Mr Benton, who won the seat at the 2019 General Election with a majority of 3,690, resigned from his post while waiting for the result of a recall petition. He lost the Conservative whip after he was suspended from Parliament for breaching lobbying rules earlier this year.
