Korea Box Office: ‘The Roundup’ Reaches $54 Million in Second Weekend

Its cumulative total of $1.15 million includes some $44,000 of previews earned on 14 screens.The feat by a local art-house film gives further support to the notion that cinema attendance is rebounding in Korea.

Top Gun: Maverick is a huge hit.

After nearly three weeks on release, the film has an accumulated total of $73.3 million.Its cumulative total is built on 8.87 million spectators.

That result is the best second weekend hold for any film that has opened to over $100 million, dropping just 32% from the Tom Cruise sequel’s $126.7 million 3-day opening. By comparison, the Marvel films “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” both fell 67% in their second weekend while Warner Bros./DC’s “The Batman” fell 50% in its second weekend back in March.In addition, the film is now already Cruise’s highest grossing domestic release before inflation adjustment and Paramount’s highest grossing film since “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” ($352 million) in 2011, ranking in the studio’s top 10 all-time.

Those returns rank among the top 10 highest-grossing second weekends in domestic box office history.Pandemic times or not, the Paramount and Skydance release is eclipsing significant box office milestones at record speed.

Not only is that just a 33% drop from the Tom Cruise film’s $126.7 million 3-day opening, but it is also higher than the opening weekend of every other film in Cruise’s career, including every “Mission: Impossible” film. With this result, “Top Gun: Maverick” will see its domestic total soar to $290 million by the end of the weekend, already making it the top domestic grosser of Cruise’s career before inflation adjustment.

The release pattern on JW:D differs from that of Fallen Kingdom which debuted in 48 overseas markets in 2018, but is similarly also before domestic which this time around goes June 10.

The sequel, which sees Cruise return to the cockpit after 36 years, collected $156 million in its first four days of release.Those ticket sales were enough to overtake Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which launched with $153 million over the long weekend in 2007, as the biggest Memorial Day debut in history.Paramount and Skydance had originally expected “Top Gun: Maverick” to finish the long weekend with $151 million, but the film had a better-than-expected turnout on Sunday, pushing the three-day haul to $126 million.
