Box Office: ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Unearthing $142 Million Opening Weekend

Universal/Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World Dominion is set to thrash past $500M worldwide today. The global total through Thursday is $493.2M. That includes $302.1M from the international box office and $191.1M domestic on the Colin Trevorrow-directed threequel.

Combined with its $143 million domestic debut, the film stands at a robust $389 million and will imminently cross the $400 million mark.Directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt, “Dominion” opened in 57 new foreign markets this weekend, including China, the United Kingdom and France.China, which has been increasingly hostile to Hollywood films, embraced the film, where it opened in first place with $52.5 million.

“Jurassic World Dominion” is many things – it’s the culmination of the “Jurassic World” franchise that began in 2015 and also the conclusion of a storyline that has been going on since the first “Jurassic Park” in 1993; it’s one of the summer’s most anticipated blockbusters; and it’s a homecoming for Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, to the franchise that made them household names. “Jurassic World Dominion” is that it’s a metaphor unto itself; the ongoing moral of the film series is that mixing the wrong strains of DNA leads to disaster, and that lesson is writ large in the awkward and clumsy attempt to graft the stars of the original “Jurassic Park” onto the “Jurassic World” movies, a combo platter that only serves to make the latter-day protagonists even less interesting by comparison.The other generous read, although it’s damning with faint praise, is to call this the best “Jurassic” movie since the original in 1993, but that doesn’t mean this one’s not, much like its predecessors, a hot mess. It’s just a hot mess with some effectively scary bits, a cool car chase and Laura Dern.“Dominion” spends so much time jumping back and forth between the “Park” cast and the “World” plot that one can only hope editor Mark Sanger (“Gravity”) received combat pay.
