Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes reckons he’s done in the January transfer window and heaped praise on the club’s head of recruitment Russ Richardson because he ensured no wholesale changes were needed this winter.
Richardson, who previously worked alongside McInnes at both Bristol City and Aberdeen, was appointed in September 2022 with the gaffer insisting it’s been night and day since his arrival at the club.
James Balagizi signed a loan deal from Liverpool earlier in the week. Alongside veteran striker Greg Stewart sealing a return to Killie, that’s likely the extent of the incomings in Ayrshire and says they’re already preparing for next season.
McInnes said: “It’s such a comfort for me, really. Any manager has a million things to do in any given day. Sometimes recruiting players can be so draining and time consuming. There are hundreds that don’t come to anything.
“You pore over footage, you speak to agents and a lot of the time you’re either reaching too high or the players aren’t going to cut the level.
“You waste a lot of time and energy and you’ve got to try to delegate your time the best you can. Having Russ and his staff under him has been a godsend. The reason we could maybe be a wee bit more strategic in the summer was we got Russ in before the January window last year.
“We have that six or eight months to prepare for what’s happening and the preparation for next season is already underway.
“I feel this time we can take a breath, be a bit more relaxed about it and confident about it and trust Russ and his lads to look towards the summer. A lot of times we took what we could get last season rather than exactly what we needed.”
