Judy Blume Talks Censorship With 16-Year-Old Bookstore Owner: ‘It’s People Like You Who Give Us Hope’

Angelique Jackson Literary icon Judy Blume has been in the public eye for more than 50 years, but lately she’s been posing for even more cameras than usual. For the past few months, Blume has been everywhere — from the red carpet premiere of the feature adaptation of her 1970 classic “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” in Los Angeles last week, to Variety’s Power of Women ceremony in New York City, where she was honored earlier this month. But on Monday night in Studio City, Calif., it was Blume’s husband George Cooper on the other side of a cell phone camera lens. As Blume was introduced to an eager (and pink-masked) crowd by 16-year-old Annabelle Chang, who owns Annabelle’s Book Club LA, Cooper sprang from his seat behind the desk to capture the moment on his cell phone.

Judy Blume Celebrates ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ Movie Premiere in Los Angeles

Carla Renata Judy Blume is having a major moment. Not only did Prime Video just release a documentary about her life, “Judy Blume Forever,” but Hulu recently also announced it’s turning her book, “Summer Sisters,” into a limited series. And on April 28, a film adaptation of “Are you There God? It’s Me, Margaret?” will be in theaters. “I needed to read everything she ever wrote because she just wrote the truth about what it felt like to be that age,” the film’s director Kelly Fremon Craig told Variety at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere on Saturday.  Craig wrote a letter to Blume asking to adapt the YA novel. The author was already a fan of Craig’s “The Edge of Seventeen.” “I knew she was the right one. I couldn’t be happier. I may be the only book writer who has ever said that the movie is better than my book, and I mean it,” said Blume, who was recently honored by Variety at its Power of Women luncheon. “This wonderful group has given me the gift of lifetime.”

Emily Ratajkowski Quit Acting, Fired Her Team Because ‘Hollywood Is F—ed Up’: ‘I Felt Like a Piece of Meat Who People Were Judging’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Emily Ratajkowski announced in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times that she has basically quit acting because Hollywood is so “fucked up.” The supermodel started her acting career in a major way with a supporting role opposite Ben Affleck in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.” Ratajkowski played Andie Fitzgerald, a student of Nick Dunne’s (Affleck) who is also having an affair with him. She went on to star in films such as “We Are Your Friends” and “I Feel Pretty,” but she hasn’t acted in a movie since 2019’s “Lying and Stealing.” “I didn’t feel like, ‘Oh, I’m an artist performing and this is my outlet,’” Ratajkowski said about quitting her acting career. “I felt like a piece of meat who people were judging, saying, ‘Does she have anything else other than her [breasts]?’”
