EXCLUSIVE: Multi-Emmy and Tony winner Judith Light is set to star opposite Billy Crystal in Apple TV+‘s Before. Crystal also is executive producing the limited series, from Paramount TV Studios, which has tapped Adam Bernstein as director of the pilot episode.
Written by Sarah Thorp, Before is a 10-episode atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller about Eli (Crystal), a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn (Light), encounters a troubled young boy who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past.
Seductively enigmatic, Lynn (Light) is the love of Eli’s life, but her recent death may not be quite what it seems. As Eli digs deeper into the hidden life of the wife he thought he knew, he soon finds Lynn haunting him from beyond the grave.
Thorp serves as showrunner and executive produces with Crystal, Eric Roth, Bernstein and Jet Wilkinson. Bernstein succeeds as director Barry Levinson who departed earlier this year.
Light, who recently received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, can be seen in recurring roles on Max’s Julia and Starz’s Shining Vale. Her recent credits also include Peacock’s Poker Face, for which she has a Guest Actress Emmy nomination, Searchlight’s The Menu as well as The Young Wife and Down Low for FilmNation, both of which premiered at SXSW, and Out of My Mind for Disney+. Light is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Bernstein has directed the pilots for Fargo, 30 Rock, Scrubs, Alpha House, and Strangers With Candy, sharing in 30 Rock‘s 2007 Comedy Series Emmy win in his role as supervising producer. His recent directing credits include Apple TV+’s Silo and Showtime’s Billions. He is repped by CAA.

The program, in its 46th year, followed the traditional format that showcases tributes to each honoree by artists and celebs whose identities are undisclosed in advance. It kicked off with a lively parade of dancers down the aisles, led by emcee and former honoree Gloria Estefan and accompanied by Sheila E on drums—a first for the event.
