Juanma Lillo will lead the Blues in the absence of his friend and colleague as the manager recovers from back surgery in Barcelona, but has been clear about who will be in charge for the trip to Sheffield United. "Pep is always there!" he told reporters on Friday.
Lillo has seen the development of a coaching career that has brought remarkable success at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City. The Catalan is under contract until 2025 at the Etihad and has not ruled out extending his stay beyond a ninth year if he still feels it is the right fit.
Two years is a long time in football, but Lillo still sees a manager who is striving every day to get better and to make everyone around him better. "It's very difficult to find someone such as him with such capacity and willingness," he said. His continuous willingness, it's year after year.

"I don't feel he's lacking. He was already a bit of a coach when he was a player. When he was a player it was the same. He already had a true vision, a global vision of everything.
"He's open, he always wants to improve and implement new things. He observes the players you have and the capacity to do that helps him to grow. The players are never the same, it's sharp. He's very intelligent.
"He grasps what to do and with whom to do it. The day-to-day, interacting, exchanging ideas. It becomes more robust.
"That helps to improve everyone around him, we all improve and try and pitch in. For Pep to always be there, he doesn't need a lot of input. He's constantly building and generating ideas."
