The victory was crucial in Roma's quest for European glory, and it also saw Mourinho become the manager with the highest number of European wins since 1992 - the year the Champions League was introduced.
According to Transfermarkt, the triumph over HJK in the Europa League saw the Portuguese coach move level with United legend Ferguson with 106 victories.
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has won 105, followed by Arsene Wenger (96) and Pep Guardiola (95).
However, Sir Alex still leads Mourinho with the most victories in European club competitions in their respective careers, with the Scotsman recording 278 victories, while the Roma manager is currently on 119 wins, as per Transfermarkt.
During Ferguson's 26 years with United, he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League titles. Meanwhile, Mourinho - who took charge of the Reds between 2016-2018 - won three trophies at Old Trafford.
The Reds were also in Europa League action on Thursday night, with Erik ten Hag's side securing a 2-0 win at Sheriff thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, who recorded his first goal of the new season.
