Marc Malkin Senior Film Awards, Events & Lifestyle Editor Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickson didn’t know each other well before shooting their new drama “The Iron Claw.” But then came their first wardrobe fitting and camera tests. “Our bodies had to be completely shaved,” White told me at a reception for the film at NeueHouse Hollywood on Monday in Los Angeles. “We were strangers at the time.
Now I know them and love them, but at the time, it was like, ‘Hi, nice to meet you and yes, they’re shaving off all of our body hair.’” “They shaved everything,” Dickinson said. “It was incredible but we also looked ridiculous.” Directed by Sean Durkin, the film tells the real-life story of the Von Erich brothers, Kevin (Efron), Kerry (White), David (Dickinson) and Mike (Stanley Simons), one of wrestling’s most famous families that suffered an enormous amount of personal tragedy. Following the shaving, the actors had to squeeze into their itsy-bitsy 1980s wrestling costumes.
“It was always smaller, always shorter. It was never, ‘Cover up their skin,’” White remembered. “I don’t think any of us were confident in those first fittings.
“We were like, ‘We have a lot of work to do.’” And work they did. White packed on about 25 pounds of muscle and Dickinson gained about 22. But nothing compared to Efron’s Hulk-like transformation.
“I joke about it but it’s true — I didn’t want to stand close to him while shooting the movie because it would make me look my size,” White said. “But it’s hard because we play brothers. I do have to be around him.
Although I tried to make Harris stand next to him most of the time.” Dickinson said, “I’m not naturally like a beefy guy. I’m a pretty skinny dude. You look at pictures of the boys and

Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events As we know by now, Zack Snyder has massive plans for his “Rebel Moon” universe. The franchise launches with the Netflix movie “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire,” followed by a sequel that will be released next year. Snyder is developing a “Rebel Moon” comic book series, mobile game (“I would love to do big console game,” he says), an animated component, and is even releasing his first book of photography featuring a collection of black and white portraits he shot on set.
Zac Efron was two movies deep into the Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” franchise, in which he played singing, dancing basketball phenom Troy Bolton. He’d been the swoony romantic lead in the movie musical “Hairspray,” opposite John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer, was shortly to play opposite Matthew Perry in “17 Again,” and had pulled his T-shirt up on the cover of Rolling Stone under the headline “The New American Heartthrob.” At 21, Efron might have seemed like the kind of actor who was as likely to watch footage of the moon landing and decide to become an astronaut as he was to take inspiration from Mickey Rourke’s grizzled, broken-down performance. And yet.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Gladiators, pain freaks, brutes, clowns, true athletes, fake competitors: The slab-of-meat stars of professional wrestling are all those things. And back in the 1980s, when wrestling was reaching its cultural zenith, it almost looked as if you could divide the world between those who took wrestling on the level and those who dismissed it as a vulgar, over-the-top bad joke.
Considering the foothold it has in American pop culture, it’s somewhat surprising that there have been so few movies about pro wrestling. In fact, over the last 15 years, the only real notable narrative films on the subject are Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 drama “The Wrestler” and the solid, but already forgotten 2018 dramedy “Fighting With My Family.” The last 12 months have been something of a sea change, comparably, with Roger Ross Williams’ superb “Cassandro” about famed exótico lucha libre wrestler Saúl Armendáriz and now, Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw,” a spotlight on the Von Erichs, one of the most respected and snakebit families in the sport.

Matthew Perry on Monday while receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Efron, 36, and Perry, who unexpectedly died in October, starred together in 2009’s “17 Again.” It was one of Efron’s first films outside of Disney’s “High School Musical.” “I want to mention someone that’s not here today, and that’s Matthew Perry, who was so kind and generous with me when we worked on ’17 Again,'” Efron said during his star ceremony. “Collaborating with him — it was so much fun and it really did propel me and motivate me in so many ways.

Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events As Fantasia Barrino rides the awards season buzz for her feature film acting debut in “The Color Purple,” the second season “American Idol” winner is thinking of her next moves on the big screen. “I want something very challenging,” Fantasia told Variety Tuesday night at Elle’s Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles, where she was honored alongside her co-stars Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson.
While 2023 is coming to a close, one of the last major (largely) unseen and still super anticipated movies of the year is “The Iron Claw.” From filmmaker Sean Durkin, known for “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” the U.K. TV drama “Southcliffe,” and “The Nest,” his latest is a wrestling drama about the Von Erich Brothers.
Rosalia and Jeremy Allen White have confirmed their relationship. The pair shared the news to the world after a source confirmed that they were dating after spending some time getting to know each other as friends. The two were recently spotted while out for a walk in Los Angeles, holding hands as they both wore black clothing.
Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Gael García Bernal is nursing a slight cold. He thinks he may have caught a bug during a flight to Los Angeles. But he theorizes it could have also come from the Academy Museum Gala, held in the museum’s open-air atrium, which he attended two nights before I meet him for breakfast at Chateau Marmont.
Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Joey King is speaking out about her “Kissing Booth” co-star Jacob Elordi’s criticism of their hit Netflix rom-com franchise. “I think it’s unfortunate anyone would feel that way,” King told me Saturday at the Balenciaga fashion show in Los Angeles. “I had a great time making those movies no matter what anyone says.” Elordi disappointed the casts of the three “The Kissing Booth” films as well as their fans when he slammed the film in his GQ Men of the Year cover story.
Rosalia and Jeremy Allen White are really feeding into those relationship rumors.
