Viewers of ITV's The 1% Club were left puzzled on Saturday night when two clever contestants, Maisie and Alex, got stumped by a difficult question.
The pair had been doing really well on the show, but the final maths problem was just too hard for them. Even those watching from home admitted they couldn't solve it in just 30 seconds.
The question posed by Lee Mack was: "Given that: 0+100 =100, 1+99 = 100, 2+98 =100, What is the sum of all the whole numbers between zero and 100? ".
Both contestants guessed 5000, but that wasn't the right answer.
The correct answer was actually 5050. Lee explained the solution, saying: "There are 50 pairs that total 100 (0 and 100, 1 and 99, 2 and 98, etc.).
That makes 5000, but there is also the number 50 in the middle, which is not in a pair but also needs to be counted, giving a total of 5050." After deciding to take their winnings, Lee asked Alex and Maisie: "What were you thinking? " Alex replied: "I was going to go for it and I was thinking, 'I don't know what I want to do' but I just can imagine my mum and dad saying, 'Take the money'." Maisie added: "Usually when I watch this, I would just gamble it, I came with nothing so I'll leave with nothing if that's the case but also, it just seems a bit too much money." Lee said: "If there are two of you...if there are eight of you, you are risking less money.
When you walked down, did you think you were going to go for it? ". "I was doubting it," Maisie confessed.
"If my brother was here, he'd be like, 'Yeah I am doing it'." People watching at home were puzzled by the question too. Someone wrote on social media: "I didn't even try with that one.
