West End star Darren Day, who appeared in the very first series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, has revealed that he went "cold turkey" from alcohol and drugs while in the jungle.
Reflecting on his time in the jungle, Darren, 55, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Monday, 20 November, where he opened up about his battles with drug and alcohol addiction. Speaking to hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid, Darren said: "I've never said this publicly before, but I went cold turkey from drink and drugs in front of the whole country on I’m A Celebrity..." And sharing that he was drunk when he flew out to Australia, he continued: "I was smashed when I got on the plane." Discussing his exit from the jungle, Darren said: "I was in the jungle for two weeks and I went straight back into active addiction." And while Darren did eventually become sober, he revealed that he relapsed during the first Covid-19 lockdown, and was given just six months to live.
He then shared that it was singer Robbie Williams, who has faced his own battle with addiction, who saved his life and got him into rehab.
The GMB Twitter account shared a video of Darren's interview on X, formerly Twitter, with fans sharing their support for the actor. One commenter wrote: "Wishing Darren all the love in the world.
That's a massive weight of his shoulders speaking so openly about his struggles this morning, sending you lots of love Darren." "Fair play Darren Day.
Another step to recovery. Opening up on TV was very courageous and truthful" added another.
