Coronation Street actress Joan Savage has sadly died aged 89.
The star briefly played dancer Celeste Pickersgill in the hit ITV soap, with her character being partnered with Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) in a competition at the Tower Ballroom. Despite her time on the cobbles, Joan was best known for her roles in The Arthur Haynes Show between 1956 and 1962 and in hit British sitcom Dad's Army. Joan's impressive career in TV and stage spanned six decades.
The actress sadly died in early November at Brinsworth House, Twickenham, with no cause of death yet revealed. She leaves behind her husband Bryan, daughter Kelly and grandsons Mark and Simon. Born in January 1934, Joan joined the Blackpool Children's Tower Ballet and Blackpool Tower Circus when she was aged 12, after accompanying her comedian father Norman around local clubs around north England.
Her incredible performances, which included riding elephants, rollerskating, singing and dancing, led to her appearing on Mr Ronnie Taylor’s Variety Fanfare on BBC Radio and touring as the leading lady in a George and Alfred Black revue called Music and Madness. It was during this tour that Joan met her husband Ken Morris, who she married in Blackpool in 1955, with the couple teaming up as a double act. Joan also continued to pursue her solo career with comedy and impressions, as well as covers of popular love songs such as Love Letters in the Sand, Norah Malone, Hello Happiness Goodbye Blues.
