ITV boss Dame Carolyn McCall has shared that she is "deeply concerned" about former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield. Dame Carolyn has appeared before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee to answer questions about the broadcaster’s approach to safeguarding and complaint handling. It comes after Phillip, 61, admitted to having an affair with a much younger male colleague while working at ITV.
In his statement, he also apologised for 'lying' to staff, friends and family when they questioned him about affair rumours. The parliamentary session will cover ITV’s initial investigation into rumours regarding Phillip that had began spreading online years before he admitted to the affair. They will also investigate the ITV-commissioned review into the facts by barrister Jane Mulcahy KC, the working culture on This Morning and other productions, as well as ITV’s use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and its whistleblowing policy. Following his resignation from ITV, Phillip gave an interview to the BBC in which he said he now understands how deceased television presenter Caroline Flack felt in the wake of his scandal. Caroline took her own life in 2020.
Asked about Phillip's well-being, and the comparison to Caroline, Dame Carolyn told MPs: "Phillip is in counselling, which is being funded by ITV. "I don’t want to make comparisons (about Caroline Flack) but I’m very concerned for his welfare. I spoke to him the day before (he stood down from This Morning).
"I phoned him and said I know this is very difficult. He was grateful and said it meant so much to him. I didn’t know he was then going to admit he lied to us." Continuing, she also expressed concern for the other individual involved in the affair.
