Welcome back to Insider. It’s been a heavy few days for the world and the entertainment sector, but Jesse Whittock is here with the most important TV and film news of the past week for you.
Shock and horror: It’s hard to know where to begin with the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East. Thousands have died since a Hamas-led militia crossed the Gaza Strip border and began attacking Israeli villages and kibbutzes. There’s no end to the conflict in sight, with Israel now blockading Gaza and ordering Gaza City residents to evacuate, while there is growing international concern about the safety of Palestinian citizens who will soon be devoid of food, water and fuel. The history of the conflict runs deep and this isn’t the forum to discuss it, beyond believing that violence cannot be the answer. Like the rest of the world, the entertainment sector has reacted with horror and shock, with many Hollywood leaders condemning the attack on Israel. We’ve tried to make sense of what’s happening on the ground, with Ted Johnson speaking with the U.S. news correspondents translating the awful events, and writing various reports on how political leaders are responding. Industry response: The shockwaves have been felt through the industry and will continue to do so. Sean Penn, Matthew Fox and Kick Gurry cancelled an appearance at Mipcom Cannes next week, in which they would have talked about their comedy war series C*A*U*G*H*T. That news was followed by confirmation from Mipcom organizer RX France that 70 market-accredited Israeli execs were not expected to attend. UPDATED with rescheduled date: The Academy Museum Gala, which had been postponed last month in the wake of Hamas‘ attack on Israel, has been rescheduled for December 3.
Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent The Marrakech International Film Festival has announced its full jury, signaling that the event is forging ahead with its 20th edition despite the Israel-Hamas conflict — which has caused cancellations of several other fests in the region — and the earthquake that hit the country in September. Joining Jessica Chastain – who is the fest’s previously announced jury president – will be Iranian actor Zar Amir; French actor Camille Cottin; Australian actor and director Joel Edgerton; British director Joanna Hogg; U.S. director Dee Rees; Swedish-Egyptian director Tarek Saleh; Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård and French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani.
The Los Angeles Times reported.On Sunday, CAA confirmed that Dakhil also would, for the time being, give up her position as co-head of the motion picture department. While stepping back from some of her responsibilities, the powerful agent will continue working with her current A-list clientele, CAA said. Dakhil on Wednesday reposted an Instagram story that read, in part, “You’re learning who supports genocide.” In addition to the post, Dakhil wrote, “That’s the line for me.” She shared a second photo with the caption, “What’s more heartbreaking than witnessing genocide? Witnessing the denial that genocide is happening.” Soon after the posts were deleted and Dakhil issued an apology to Variety for the “hurtful language.” “I made a mistake with a repost in my Instagram story, which used hurtful language.
Paddy Cosgrave, the CEO and cofounder of annual tech conference Web Summit, has resigned after his comments on the Israel-Hamas war led Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon to cancel their participation.
Madonna took a moment to address the current Israel-Hamas conflict while on stage at The O2, expressing her exasperation at how human beings are capable of “being so cruel to one another”.The artist urged the crowd to “remember we are human beings here” because “we cannot lose our humanity” and to make a difference by bringing “light into the world”.Madonna had addressed the conflict briefly in the early shows of her four-night run of ‘Celebration’ shows at the London arena, saying on the opening night that “watching what’s happening in Israel and Palestine” breaks her heart.
