Disgraced paedophile Jimmy Savile abused his position of power decades before his TV career, targeting young girls and boys at DJ nights held at clubs in the north of England.
A new four-part BBC series based on the Jimmy Savile sex scandal looks into how one of Britain's most notorious serial sex offenders used his status first as a club night DJ and later as a TV presenter to carry out his disgusting attacks in plain sight.
During the first episode, a former acquaintance of Savile said he utilised his position as a local kids and teen DJ to prey on youngsters when he was a dance hall manager in Leeds in the early 1960s report the Mirror.
Prior to his TV career, Savile managed the Mecca Locarno ballroom in Leeds as well as the Mecca-owned Palais dance hall in Ilford, Essex and the Plaza Ballroom in Manchester where his children's discos were popular with local teens.
Patrick Skinner, 82, who was a former acquaintance of Saville said: "At one point we were standing on a balcony overlooking the dance floor where there were several hundred young girls gyrating to the music.
"I commented on it being 'quite a sight' and Jimmy replied ‘Aye, I’ve shafted more than 75 per cent of them. The hall was full of girls as young as 14.”
During one scene in the BBC show, Savile (played by Steve Coogan), is seen ordering his henchmen to brutally beat a male reveller. In another scene, a local police officer is seen rebuffing the assaulted man's complaint, choosing to side with Jimmy and hinting at the DJ's ability to manipulate the police.
One harrowing part of the show tells the story of a young, shy girl called Darien whom Savile hand-picked out of the crowd at a children's disco and took down to his office.
