There are an estimated 13m pet dogs in Britain, but only a few thousand American bully XLs. But since 2022 the giant breed has been involved in almost three quarters of the fatal dog attacks in this country, it's been claimed.
On Friday the Rishi Sunak said XL bullies will be banned by the end of the year. In a video statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the Prime Minister said: "The American XL bully dog is a danger to our communities, particularly our children.
"I share the nation’s horror at the recent videos we’ve all seen. Yesterday we saw a another suspected XL bully dog attack, which has tragically led to a fatality. It is clear this is not about a handful of badly trained dogs, it’s a pattern of behaviour and it cannot go on."
Here in Greater Manchester the breed has been involved in a number of high-profile attacks this year, including the tragic death of a dad-of-five Jonathan Hogg in Leigh.
But in the wake of calls to ban the breed XL bully owners have been coming forward to insist their dogs are safe. Ellee Keegan told the M.E.N. how she trusts her XL bully so much she lets other people's children pet him.

The 26-year-old bought the eight stone dog, named Costa, for almost £3,000 18 months ago. Ellee says Costa has never attacked anyone and urged people not to 'bully her bully'.
