The teenager’s disordered eating began at the start of the pandemic when she felt she had no sense of control. The only thing she had power over was what she ate.
Consuming 200 calories a day, Maddie weighed just six stone at the height of her illness. She wore baggy clothes to hide her protruding bones from her loved ones.

But her dark secret was finally uncovered when she collapsed while working at a Covid testing site. An ambulance was called and Maddie was taken to hospital for checks.
After being discharged, her concerned loved ones took her to see a doctor. There, they learned Maddie had anorexia.
The 19-year-old was then referred to an outpatient mental health unit where she remained for several weeks. She was then admitted to hospital where she underwent intense therapy for six months.
But following her release, Maddie relapsed almost immediately and was sent straight back to the eating disorder unit.
“I didn’t want to get better,” Maddie, now 23, told the Manchester Evening News. “Nothing would motivate me. I fought every nurse and support worker that would try and make me eat. I was just on a mission to self-sabotage. I was very poorly and couldn’t see it at the time.”
Maddie was struggling to see a light at the end of the tunnel. That was until the Women's Euros got underway in 2022 and something “clicked” in the teenager’s brain.
